I've been fascinated by all the diaries lately discussing opinions on how the Administration and Congress is not doing enough, doing the best they can or whatever the writer's view is. A common thread running through a lot of comments is what can we do about it.
Unfortunately we've already seen what a lot of money can do especially when secretly funneled into campaigns. But I do believe 'we the people' can still have an effect.
Last month I began my own very small action to do something about incoming Majority Speaker John Boehner's comments he will help the economy with jobs. Right after he first broadcast these remarks, a campaign of faxing letters to him stating "Where's My Job?" began through the power of the internet. When I read about all those people faxing, I thought I would try to do something. I first wrote about this last month on DK and amongst some encouraging comments was also the comment that what I proposed would not be helpful at all.
Though I found this discouraging, I felt I would soldier on. So I have created a website www.JohnBoehnerWheresMyJob.com and one of the first small actions was to start a petition to send to Boehner once he becomes Majority Speaker. My first baby steps got me about 50 signatures but it's a start. This month I would like to encourage people to send Letters to Editors of their local newspapers. I have on the website a draft text to use plus emails of newspapers all over the US.
We all hear everyone talk about what should be done so I feel this is a first step. Since the mission is to keep pressure on for jobs, the site also has resources for those looking for jobs. I know from personal experience it is a nightmare out there (my husband was out of work from Jan. 2008 to May 2010) and now with unemployment benefits expiring it is going to get a lot worse.
If you feel so inclined, stop by the site, take a look around and please sign the petition and write a letter to your local newspaper. If it get published, let us know. Each month I would like to post a diary with some action to take, hope you will join me.
