The day after the deal was announced, Senate Democrats are beginning to express their displeasure with the so-called compromise that President Obama crafted with his new-found friends in the Republican Party.
Calling the deal an "absolute disaster," Bernie Sanders is threatening a filibuster, Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is "very unhappy,", Mary Landrieu (D-LA) said she was "puzzled with the president’s enthusiasm" for giving tax breaks for the wealthy, and when asked what he thought about the deal, Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said, "Not much." And in the coming days we can expect that criticism to swell.
The question is, are they willing to fight? Because if they are, they do have an obscure, apparently forgotten piece of ammunition at their disposal:
All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.
Crazy, I know. But the bottom line is, the President can make deals with the Republican minority until the cows come home. It can't become law unless Democrats go along with it.
