Those incredibly cynical words were in a comment on one of my diaries. It was an antiwar diary. Or maybe I should say pro-peace, and be positive.
I've spoken before, in diaries like this, about the Case-Church amendment, which effectively ended funding for the Vietnam War. I noticed that in the Wikipedia article, one particular line was removed:
"The Case-Church amendment was passed in response to popular feeling against the war, promoted by an active antiwar organization."
But the money quote, and one that I hope the readers on this site are starting to get, is this one:
Between 1965 and 1975, the United States spent $111 billion on the war ($686 billion in FY2008 dollars).[244] This resulted in a large federal budget deficit.
"there's not a lot of pacifists on the site."
Well, there had better start to be.
All of the right- and left- politics bullshit going on here is secondary to the way that the MIC (in case you don't know, I'm talking about the military-industrial complex, now the military-industrial-corporate complex) has taken over our country.
It's the one group of industries that is weathering the 'recession' successfully.
it makes absolutely nothing that we can use to improve the nation, build better infrastructure, improve education, or do anything to promote green industries.
There's a lot of talk about "the rich" on this site; there is no industry that enriches "the rich" like the military industries. Dick Cheney, our ex-vice president, made almost $1 billion in stock options after leaving office; that was because he was ex-chairman of KBR, the company that supplies our soldiers with most of their needs. and he's only one small example.
Are you angry at the government? Join the peace movement.
Are you angry at the sellouts in the Democratic Party? Join the peace movement.
Are you angry at George Bush and Dick Cheney, who took us into two useless wars and are now reaping huge benefits? Join the peace movement.
Do you want to do something real to bring the United States into the modern world? To improve our finances? Our education? Our infrastructure? Join the peace movement.
Lots of people recently have written that "this site is going down".
No wonder.
"There's not a lot of pacifists on this site"
It's not a question of pacifism: it's a question of seeing which way the wind blows.
And it's blowing all the money right into the hands of our enemies, yours and mine. People who would rather destroy a country than give up a penny of their profits, and I'm not talking about destroying Afghanistan or Iraq, I'm talking about destroying the United States.
Because like it or not, that's what's happening. Eisenhower was right. We have let ourselves be bought and sold by the military-industrial-corporate complex. And until we decide to do things differently, we are the slaves of that.
I'm sorry that my diaries are not all full of daisies and good cheer. I apologize for throwing the truth out in front of you again. I hope it didn't spoil your day.
But I can guarantee you one thing; it's not going to go away.
Until we get a strong peace movement going in this country again, nothing is going to change. Oh, we'll make strides in "green energy", but until we put the military-industrial-corporate complex in its place, we'll be moving backwards. Everything that we care about, everything that we love will be enslaved, in thrall to that ravening force that is devouring everything we hold dear. Eisenhower was right.
It's time for a strong peace movement again; dust off that old peace symbol, because the people can be heard. They were in the 60s, and they can be again.
