So I received this email in my Inbox on Facebook and thought this 10 Point Guide, called "I Can Fix It" could start a discussion here on DKOS. I will give a top line of the 10 points, 5 for whites and 5 for People of Color.
More below the fold...
Here is the link to the blog post. You will find a link to the pdf of the full guide at the bottom of the blog post here.
The five tips for each group is based on discussions with group members.
So let's get to it.
The 5 tips for whites (summary)
- Admit it - The first step is to admit you have a race
- Listen - "I've found that really listening to people of color and believing their experience is eye-opening
- Educate yourself - Seriously. Read a book or get on the net.
- Broaden your experience - Caution: please don't do this until you've successfully completed Steps 1 - 3
- Take Action - "Now where do I put my foot after I've taken it out of my mouth
As I said, this is just a summary of the 5 tips for whites. Please do read the pdf as there is more illustrative commentary about each point.
The 5 tips for People of Color
- Get Real - It's not that easy being Green
- Speak out - "You really didn't just say that, did you?"
- Educate Yourself - "You don't have to teach White people, but you do have to educate yourself and other people of color
- Build Ties - "There is power in numbers"
5 Take Care - Racism and Combatting it Takes its toll
I found the the ten point guide to be a thoughtful convention for attempting to alleviate some of the racial tension on this site. While I don't agree with all of the tips for People of Color, I do think the guide still hold some value.
So discuss - Agree or disagree with the guide in part or in its entirety. I don't want to completely copy over the entire guide, this diary is a teaser. Please read the pdf and come back to discuss the guide.
Short diary I know, but some things don't lend themselves to a diatribe. I would rather hear the input and critique of others.
