He made a Facebook post about ten minutes ago:
You can call what I am doing today whatever you want, you it call it a filibuster, you can call it a very long speech. I'm not here to set any great records or to make a spectacle. I am simply here today to take as long as I can to explain to the American people the fact that we have got to do a lot better than this agreement provides.

ACTION UPDATE 8:45 am PST: Several commenters have said that other Senators (Franken, Brown, et al) should get out there and support Bernie. I agree. Call them (here's a Senate phone list) and ask them to get their butts out on the floor and back Bernie up. Don't just sit back and watch, people. Do something to help Bernie out.
UPDATE 9:40 am PST: A comment worth sharing:
Ladies and gentlemen, we are seeing history in the making here. Regardless of whether Bernie and Sherrod ultimately succeed, there is an enormous civics lesson happening in front of our eyes here. We are seeing that incredibly rare event: what responsible governing looks like. -- flitedocnm

FINAL UPDATE 4:00 pm PST: Senator Sanders just concluded his remarks. 8-plus hours without leaving the floor. This is an amazing effort and we all owe Senator Sanders a huge debt of gratitude. FINAL ACTION POINTS: PLEASE contact Senator Sanders and thank him. Also contact Senator Sherrod Brown and Senator Mary Landrieu and thank them for showing up in support of Senator Sanders. AND KEEP THE HEAT ON! There's a whole weekend coming up before the Senate reconvenes on Monday - don't let your Congresscritters forget for one minute how unhappy their constituents are with this tax deal. Keep calling, faxing and emailing them. Don't let up.
