Here in Boston, we've had many days when it was cold enough to snow, without the lovely, frosty scenery that makes it all worth it. Today that finally changed!
The view from our porch, looking toward an old church that is now a language academy, and beyond to the commuter rail station:
At about 1:00 this afternoon, I looked out my window and noticed a swirl of white flakes. I immediately updated my Facebook status with the news, and emailed McDoc, who has been especially hoping for a white Christmas.
When people hear that McDoc and I both grew up in California, they often ask us if we hate the winters here in New England, and if we plan to move back to California. We don't know yet where we'll eventually end up when McDoc is done with residency, but we actually enjoy living in an area with all four seasons. And we like snow -- we really do! It's pretty, and if you have the right clothing, winter weather really isn't so bad (of course, we don't live in Fargo or anything, so that's easy to say!).
I'll say one thing: I'll take snow over cold rain any day. When it's 30 degrees and snowing, all I have to do is put on my layers, add a hat, scarf and gloves, and I'm actually quite comfortable. But when it's, say, 45 degrees and raining? It doesn't matter what I wear -- the cold seeps into my bones and stays there. That's why I don't miss the winters in Northern California all that much.
Here are a few pictures of winter fun from the past few years!

This comment by algebrateacher, in this diary by it really is that important, for making me laugh, out loud, for real.
OK, so it was more of a chuckle, but it was out loud.
A witty, witty pun. My favorite kind.
