I am going to respectfully disagree with Markos Moulitsas' contention that the CIA is a "very liberal institution" which is "interested in a stable world." The audio of the controversial praise has been posted on Youtube and is being discussed in the progressive Firedgolake website.
In my personal view, the CIA is and has always been an ultra-conservative institution, that reportedly tortured people and shredded the video-tapes not long before Markos made these comments (2006):
* Reportedly, The CIA helped overthrow the democratically-elected government of Salvador Allende;
* 70% of Daily Kos members agree with the notion that the CIA was involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy, after whose death LBJ took us into Vietnam and stopped diplomatic talks with Cuba. I have a hard time seeing how that made the world more stable;
* The CIA partnered with the Mafia in attempting to kill Fidel Castro and other world leaders, without the knowledge (let alone consent) of Presidents Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy.
Someone in agreement with Markos would argue that many of these are past negative actions that have been corrected. And if you believe that, I have a few Iraqi WMD to sell you (CNN, "Tenet told Bush WMD case a 'slam dunk").
For the purposes of limitation, I will not continue citing the pattern of damage caused by the CIA to the United States and other nations.I will now give you all two statements, to be paired with two choices
a) is very liberal, striving for a "stable world."
b) May be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands.
If given Dennis Kucinich and CIA as the options, most liberals (by far) would pair answer "a" with Dennis Kucinich, and "b" with the "Central Intelligence Agency. In Markos' world, it is the opposite.
