The California State Senate approved legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state of California.

It still has to pass the house, but this is the first time any legislative body has endorsed same-sex marriage.
Thing is, if it got through the House (it narrowly rejected a similar bill earlier) it would go to the Governator. And Republican though he is, he has more or less said he'd sign a bill legalizing same-sex marriage.
The quote from State Senator Liz Figueroa says it all:
"Equality is equality, period. When I leave this Legislature I want to be able to tell my grandchildren I stood up for dignity and rights for all."
What a wacky concept.
