A while back, I was beaten about the head and shoulders for daring to suggest that the Arab world might be persuaded to improve the political and military situation in Iraq, by mediating a settlement in Iraq that involves the withdrawal of American forces. Someone seems to agree with me on today's Op-ed page in the NYT. Milton Viorst points out the very constructive role the Arab League played in mediating an end to the Lebanese civil war, which was marked by a number of military interventions, notably those of the USA and Israel. He does a better job than I did in floating this particular balloon. But I still believe that entering a dialog with the Arab League, and asking for their help in trying to establish a better, more stable political framework in Iraq that would hasten the departure of American forces cannot make things worse than they are, and may help the situation.
