Equipped with water, snacks and homework, a group of kids and parents are staging an overnight sit-in inside Hawaii governor Linda Lingle's office tonight. They're protesting her absence from negotiations aimed at ending Hawaii's notorious Furlough Fridays which left the state with the shortest school year in the country.
The group is called Save our Schools, and has been in the forefront of Furlough Friday protests.
The world can tune in via Twitter and YouTube in what may be the first video posted from inside the posh governor's office. More than tune in, outsiders can show support via Twitter @sos808 or track hashtag #sos808.
Hawaii doesn't have many protests. This one is fully modern, organized using social media.
A tweet explained that the group used "Google Groups before even meeting IRL: >250 google group mbrs, 450 facebook groupies and 181 tweeps #sos808".
Their YouTube channel is sos808DOTorg.
Hawaii's Republican governor has tried, over the years, to break up the state-wide Board of Education into a number of baby boards, and most recently is pushing to have the independent Superintendent of Schools appointed and responsible to her instead of to the elected school board. Parents in this protest have noted that she has not attended any of the negotiations to end the Furlough Fridays that resulted from cuts to the education budget.
