As many of you know, my mission is to stop torture as the law, policy and practice of the United States, and to push to have those responsible held legally accountable.
I was asked in person on Wednesday what happens when I read about what is happening and what has happened to the prisoners in Guantanamo, at Bagram, and at the Dark Sites around the world. The truth is, I see them bloody and bruised and beaten, incoherent from exhaustion. I feel their bruises and their wounds. I hear their screams and their moans. Because they are, in too many ways, the wounds of my husband, the cries of my husband, Dan, was a Vietnam vet who survived torture. I couldn't save Dan, but I can work to save these men and boys.
ACTION is needed.
I believe that we need to stand up and show those in power that there are many of us who will not stand for anything less than the real stopping of torture, and those responsible for torture being held legally accountable.
I believe we need to:
March for Legal Accountability for Torture
So, I'm trying bring together the groups and people necessary to have a
March for Legal Accountability for Torture
on Saturday, September 4th, 2010
the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend
Washington, DC
I need help to bring this together.
I need YOUR help.
Do you have time and talents you can offer?
I need three things right fairly immediately:
Someone who can be my ears and make some phone calls on Monday
Someone who can design and create a website
Someone who is good with Facebook, who can gussy up the current one
I will also need people for transportation and accomodation coordination
security education and coordination
physical plant coordination (staging, chairs, etc.)
entertainment cooordination
as a start
I will also recommend that as many of us as possible book appointments with senators and congressional representatives in DC before or after the March, so we can clearly articulate our in depth message and make sure it is heard and understood.
Please, if you can help, let me know. My email is in my profile.
With gratitude,
Standing for justice and accountability,
for Dan,
Heather
Update: Here is the reason for the phonecalls: I use hearing aids, which makes using the phone extremely difficult. I have emailed a bunch of organizations but haven't heard back from them. So what I need is for someone to phone the organizations and ask them for an inside email address and alert them that I will be emailing. It will really make a difference.
