Based on a discussion this morning on a separate thread, I have done a lot of thinking today on what to call people who just don't like gay people or find the idea of gay people being gay together disturbing.
I don't think that "homophobe" is right, because I don't think they're "scared" of gays. I also don't think "bigot" is right, because it implies a hatred that I just don't think is there. There should be a word like "misogynist" for these folks... but there isn't.
This brings up a bigger question.
We're a big tent party, and our tent has to be big enough for everyone... but does that include people who just don't like one of the minorities in our tent?
How do we deal with this?
Is it OK to be a Democrat and just not like gays? Is OK to be a Democrat and not want gays to have equal rights (a)in housing; (b)in employment; (c)in marital status?
Would the same hold true of any other minorities in our tent? Do we pander to gays like we do to Blacks? Do we withhold our condemnation of anti-Gay people with the same fervor we do racists or antiSemites?
Why? Why not?
I am honestly interested in hearing all views.
