This serves as a follow-up to the announcement last week that one complete nutjob state Republican Rep. Huebert wanted to "look at" the banning of gays from adopting children (the text of that initial salvo is
here).
Some of dKos' readers responded by saying it was only the ramblings of one winger, and that it would not gain traction in the legislature...ALAS! You all do not know this state very well! This is Kansas, and aside from Lawrence and a few spots in and around Kansas City, this state is about as anti-gay as they come. Look what the legislature did with Huebert's "suggestion" after the jump...
Highlights from the fine Lawrence Journal-World:
Senate President Steve Morris, R-Hugoton, and House Speaker Doug Mays, R-Topeka, said the language of the adoption study request was broad and not specifically aimed at gays.
When asked whether gays should be allowed to adopt, Mays, said, "I don't know." Morris said, "I really haven't thought about it."
Uh...say what? Why did you even initiate this study? Oh yeah:
While the wording of the study request was broad, the subject was requested by Rep. Steve Huebert, R-Valley Center. He said he requested the study on behalf of a constituent who was concerned that a lesbian couple might be allowed to adopt her granddaughter, who was in foster care.
Of course, these bigots make the most asinine statements, which makes them fun to laugh at, largely because they're so ignorant:
Sen. Kay O'Connor, R-Olathe, who is vice chair of the committee, however, said she would oppose allowing gays to adopt.
People "who are openly having a homosexual lifestyle are probably not good candidates for adoptive parents," she said.
But O'Connor said she wouldn't want to remove a child who has adjusted to a gay, adoptive parent.
So, they're terrible parents. "Not good candidates", she claims. But if the kids are already there...(presumably in harm's way, right?) we better just keep them there. How kind of her. How compassionate.
This is class A discrimination. Bigotry disguised as morality. Once this gets into committee, politically it cannot fail without serious repercussions to those who oppose it. Yes, it's the sickening amalgamation of the Bible with the ignorant hicks...can we all say "Darwin"?--wait, that's now illegal here, too.
Seriously, where does this all end?
