You are in the current BP disaster ROV, number 65. Number 64 is here.
Please DO NOT Rec this diary, rather REC THE MOTHERSHIP instead. She needs your love to stay afloat.
Please be kind to kossacks with bandwidth issues. Please do not post images or videos. Again, many thanks for this.
PLEASE visit Crashing Vor's diary to find out how you can help the Gulf now and in the future. We don't have to be idle! And thanks to Crashing Vor for working on this!

I was struck with a deep sense of irony when, stumbling into this liveblog several days ago I read through and saw the request "not to post pics and video" into the comments of the liveblog, to im sure save on the loading time. Ironic because as one who has only visited the gulf coast once in her lifetime, pictures are mainly what I have to remember of the visit. Pictures that will have to suffice until such time as the Gulf Coast and the waters and lands in the area are past this current contamination crisis.
I take no measure of comfort in the realization that as a result of the spill and the after-effects, and that I may never get to see what many here who live in the area, have seen, experienced and grown to love. I’ve always been a lover of scenery and countryside, flora and fauna etc. and I think as many always have had dreams of taking that "Great American Road Trip" one day. In the wake of Katrina, I had determined that I would make a visit to the area but for one reason or another just never got around to it. Watching all these events unfold makes me wonder what will I see whenever I do get to take that trip.
This ecological catastrophe, while it affects those who reside in the area the most and first, ultimately affects each and every single one of us GREATLY.
I will leave the political posturing and assignation of blame to others. Any political feelings I may have tend to lean towards those who are being affected the most having more input and say so as to what is being done and NOT leaving it up to a company whose primary concern is profit and spin. Government in its current form I feel is not going to be as helpful as it should be because there are too many ties to the very companies that helped create this. As has been demonstrated time and again the voices of those who stand to lose the most get drowned out by the lobbyists and the money that is thrown into campaign contributions etc.
If I could I would drop all and run down to help in the efforts currently underway in the Gulf. While right now it is affecting those who live in the area the most, there are some like myself who continue to watch with tears in our eyes the horror unfolding and while feeling helpless offer up prayers for the people of the Gulf, and this country.
BP put up a video explaining the LMRP procedure and the future plans.

H/t to Pluto for finding this:
Here is an excellent image of what is supposed to exist under the wellhead. Take the comments from Halliburton with a grain of salt since this is part of their "blame those two" PR campaign.
