Today marks the transition in the House to the Republican party. With this change, the Republican-controlled House will consider stripping Delegate Eleanor Holmes of her vote in the Committee of the Whole leaving Washington D.C. without any voting voice.
Nationally, Nancy Smith from New York and Chris Spicer form Illinois are scheduled to be tried in federal court for crossing the line while protesting against the School of the Americas onto the Fort Benning military base in Georgia. And a year ago this month Haitiwas "flattened by a seismic catastrophe."
However, the Haitan people have"carved out new space for re-imagining development models, global solidarity, and the definition of "humanitarian aid."Just like many right here in DC and this country who are resisting, re-imagining new possibilities and making a commitment to not simply reform but transform the systems during this 2011 year and beyond.
Here at the Washington Peace Center we are preparing for the 2011 year and are issuing a call to "make this a year of growing resistance" as David Swanson wrote in our featured article this week. David's encouraging piece reflects on the need for us to "become the media we wish to see in the world."

You say protests are outmoded because the corporate media ignores them (unless they're corporate sponsored). I say the corporate media is outmoded because it ignores protests.
The coming year is going to see intense resistance to the plutopentagonocracy from volunteer representatives of that majority of Americans that opposes its agenda. We are not going to ask for the media cartel's approval or permission. We are going to continue developing our own communications systems, which are already working well.
If we abandon the work of protest and resistance, those acts will soon be criminalized. If we abandon the work of self-communication we will each come to believe that the rest of us support that criminalization. There is another way.
