The new Republican majority in the US House of Representatives is already making me nauseous. So I'm back again with another reminder about people who stood up against this crap and for progressive ideas. Just a little one-click diversion...
No, not all progressives were sepia-toned ladies from the early 20th century. We've got a lot of great people today, too. And this installment offers one of them, who will be obvious to many when you see the photo. Here are a few biographical hints. Can you figure out who it is? [Don't spoil it in your comments, okay?]
Who Am I?
I'm a musician, songwriter, labor activist and peace advocate with an unmistakable musical sound.
Questioned by the McCarthy-era House Committee on Un-American Activities, I refused to invoke my Fifth Amendment rights.
I recorded union songs during the 1940s.
I helped popularize the Civil Rights anthem, "We Shall Overcome."
