First off, I apologize for the hit and run diary, but I must return to work here in a bit.

But I wanted to point out that there are 3 factors that continually have been discussed regarding the tragedy Saturday in Tucson.

  1. Violent rhetoric
  1. Guns
  1. Mental illness

To the Tea Party & GOP, I say the following: on which of these fronts do you want to make progress?

So far as I can tell, the right-wingers have no intention to tone down their rhetoric, will never support sensible gun laws, and aren't interested in funding mental health services for the people of this country that need it.

They'll say that they support providing mental health services to those that need it (as a way of distracting from their disgustingly violent rhetoric), and then attempt to repeal the health care reform bill which explicitly makes mental health services available to more people (as noted in the link).

As long as the Republican Party continues to reject doing anything productive on points 1 and 2 above, and as long as they attempt to go backwards on point 3 above, it is clear that they have zero solutions to prevent events like Saturday's shooting from happening again.

If the GOP is serious about reducing violence, they must pick at least one of the three problems listed above and make a real attempt to find and implement solutions.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can have mental illness and no guns and this wouldn't have happened.  You can have violent rhetoric and no guns and this would not have happened. Access to a gun is the lynch pin here.

GUNS don't kill people. People with guns kill people.

      And, apparently, endangered whooping cranes.

Hey, I like to target shoot. I think it is fun. And I'm not against hunting. I live rurally and know the need for wildlife management. Responsible gun ownership is a freedom I feel should be protected. But that's not to say there shouldn't be a federal background check and waiting period for acquiring a firearm anywhere in the US, stiffer penalties for crimes committed with a firearm and improved reinforcement of existing laws and regulations. And no one needs an automatic anything, including a glock with a 30-round clip.

Canada has more guns per capita than the US. But they don't have the crime rate we do. Why?

Level one_rifles and shotguns not restricted

Level two_handguns heavily restricted but available

Level three_can't own_automatic weapons and handguns with barrels shorter than 4 inches(gun of choice for criminals)

They also have better social safety nets and healthcare which means they probably have a better handle on mental illness and less reason to become a criminal.
