I want to live up to her expectations. (Applause.) I want our
democracy to be as good as Christina imagined it. I want America to
be as good as she imagined it. (Applause.) All of us -– we should do
everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s
expectations. (Applause.)
Mr. President,
I agree. And I am asking you here and now to live up to those
words, to help America, and Americans to live up to those words.
You, and America and Americans, cannot live up to Christina's
expectations while you prosecute children who have been tortured for
war crimes.
You, and America and Americans, cannot live up to Christina's
expectations while you hold prisoners indefinitely without a fair
trial.
You, and America and Americans, cannot live up to Christina's
expectations while you allow those who have been responsible for
torture over the last 9 years to go uninvestigated and unpunished.
You, and America and Americans, cannot live up to Christina's
expectations while you allow people, including children, who have been
disappeared to go unaccounted for.
You, and America and Americans, cannot live up to Christina's expectations while Guantanamo remains open. Yes, I know you ordered it closed, but it remains open, and I believe there is more you can do with your bully pulpit to ask the American people to pressure to fund it's closing.
You, and America and Americans, cannot live up to Christina's
expectations when you allow techniques which are torture to remain in
the US Army Field Manual on Human Intelligence Collector Operations.
I have a 12 year old American nephew and I want a better world
for him. I will join you in your fight. Please, live up to Christina's
expectations and join me in mine.
Standing for justice and accountability,
For Dan, and for my nephew,
