The top two Republicans in the House of Representatives rejected gun control legislation soon after it was announced by a senior GOP congressman, effectively dooming its hopes for consideration.
The bill, unveiled by Rep. Peter King (R-NY) on Tuesday, would have banned people from carrying guns within 1,000 feet of elected officials in Congress. It had the support of New York City mayor and outspoken gun-control advocate Michael Bloomberg.
I know this idea didn't go anywhere but it offended the hell out of me. Banning guns within 1,000 feet of elected officials? What about the rest of us? What are we, chopped liver? What about all the people being shot in their office buildings and schools? Where's their buffer?
You can argue all you want about who in this country is worthy of such a bufferzone. But it is most definitely not the lawmakers who created this environment in the first place. This was a republican calling for this 1,000 ban. The same type of republican who insists those shooting deaths happening to the rest of us are an acceptable price to play for an unfettered Second amendment. But not when it's his ass on the line.
This is the America they've been working towards for the past 30 years and now they're trying to run from it like they cowards they are. They don't want to share the inherent risks that come with their policies and rhetoric. But the rest of us? We're on our own. And the kicker is, they expect us to thank them for it. If they're so worried about shootings then stop the violent rhetoric that causes it!
But that would hurt their standing with the tea party and effect their re-election efforts and we can't have that, can we?
