A common delusion for paranoid schizophrenics is that they are the victim of some elaborate mind control program. Jared Loughner believed this, and said that language and "grammar" were key to the mind control the government uses on the American public.

Loughner may have been repeating right wing tropes that have become common over the last three years. Google Obama mind control to see over 6,000,000 hits. Yes, the right has flogged this relentlessly for three years. There are many examples on YouTube:

The AAPS is located in Loughners home town of Tucson AZ. They have an anti-HCR lawsuit, and they believe in mind control through grammar.

Or how about Fox News?

Alex Jones warning about Obama's NWO mind control

Obama lluminauti mind control

More Obama New World Order mind Control

Are the right's claims of Obama's mind control program an attempt to get some paranoid schizophrenic to go after Obama?

Surprisingly, Beck hasn't talked about mind control very much

ROHRABACHER: Well, that is exactly what they intend and, actually, I think the word was used in the debate. They believe that people just aren't doing the right things, because they're not making choices that these liberal leftists want them to make, and thus, there must be something wrong with them.
BECK: Sure.
ROHRABACHER: Let's psychoanalyze them.
BECK: They're insane.
ROHRABACHER: That's right.....
Help me out with this one. This is what Representative Baird said —
he said: "We are not only going to unleash psychiatrists on you, it's going to be anthropologists and economists and psychologists. This is vicious, freedom-grabbing mind control at its most pernicious."

Yeah when people call you crazy for going on about "mind control," it just proves they are part of the conspiracy! Way to channel the paranoid schizophrenia, Glenn!

These articles note a similarity between Loughner and the nuttiest fringe of the Sovereign Citizen movement, which features crazy theories about grammar, mathematics, and mind control.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
