Secretary of Defense, Dr. Robert Gates is the only one in history to have been asked to remain by the Presidents' sucessor.  I have to say overall my opinion of Sec. Gates has been favorable. With his latest endeavor I may have to even upgrade my level of respect for his intelligence.

So here's my view of the story.  Gates, on his own, offerd to cut 100 billion from his budget. No questions asked. No one demanding cuts. He indicates if the rest of us are cutting, the DOD would do their part. He was aware of weapon systems and other things they no longer needed. Impressive right? Saves everyone the trouble of even looking at his budget. He has already cut it!

Now, lets consider this generous offer. We have been spending approximately 100 billion a year for the Iraq war that has now ended. Well, almost. we will pull our last 50k in advisors sometime soon. My question now becomes, if we aren't spending 100 billion on the war and you are giving us back 100 billion of your budget, what exactly are you giving us??? Exactly what waste, fraud, abuse and redundancy have you cut? You are only giving us back the Iraq War budget that you no longer need anyway. Now I don't mean to sound completely cynical but come on. Am I missing something in this picture? Shouldn't he be able to cut out at least 150 billion since he doesn't have the Iraq budget to worry about?

And while I'm on the DOD.... One quarter of our youth are obese and can't join the military???? Well duh, what better place for an obese young person than boot camp? Especially with our unemplyment numbers.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  THIS IS NOT THE TIP JAR (0+ / 0-)

Sorry, I keep waiting for it to pop up but it never did.  Please post a tip jar below!

I was just going to say that Gates' generous offer seems to me exactly the sort of "flexibility" you demonstrate to begin with in a negotiation before you start digging in deep.

    Still enjoying my stimulus package.

  •  I still haven't seen where this includes an (0+ / 0-)

actual reduction in the DOD budget or just a repositioning of funds.

"Money saved in cutting overhead and other inefficient costs on weapons programs will go toward modernizing and recapitalizing military equipment and sustaining troops,"

Indications are the budget will continue to increase but at a slower rate due to the supposed downsizing of the occupations.

Said they'd have the new procedures in place and in operation within three months.

Very impressive; most observers were expecting it to take a year or more.

  •  How about something for all the obese people? (0+ / 0-)

Wouldn't it be better to have a program that isn't in the military that helps people with their weight issues?  Boot camp involved a bunch of other things.  Boot camp-like government programs can happen and help people become less obese, or have normal weight without spending billions of dollars.

I want to know why we don't cut 150 billion a year from the DOD?  Why?  I'm agreeing with you

.... isn't as a fat-farm for rolley-polley teenagers.  It's to train our future warriors on the basic skills needed by every member of their service.

And the way to get Americans to stop blimping up so much they need individual zip-codes, is to unplug the friggin' TV and let kids play outdoors as they naturally want to do.  Otherwise f---in' consumerism is going to be the death of us all.
