I am in favor of democracy. I support the democratic protests against the Egyptian dictator.
And the best that the U.S. as a country can do is stay away, not getting involved at all trying to "help" the protesters at all.
Why? Because the U.S. track record on foreign intervention has been very bad. In the places where it was the most successful at influencing a country, they ended up with right wing dictatorships at the best, or with ongoing civil wars at the worst. Americans often have spotty historical memories when it comes to these events, but other countries don't. They remember too well.
Moreover, the U.S. government intervening in favor of the protesters will taint the movement that we would like to support. Suddenly the dictator can claim that the protests are instigated by foreigners, and turn the topic away from lack of democracy and justice into a nationalistic one.
So let's keep the U.S. government out of this. If there are ways that we can help as individuals, and we should take those routes. Let's not hurt a democratic movement by trying it to help it through our government.
