The thought of having to leave a much-loved pet behind to who knows what circumstances is terrible and we owe our people and their animals much more than that. Knowing that this place is great for animals and people, I came here.
Here is the post:
My husband is military and he's stationed in Cairo, Egypt. I know you all know what's going on over there, so here's why I'm here:
My husband and others in his office have been working for days on an evacuation plan for the pets who belong to the military members and State Department employees. The federal regulations for situations like this authorize these employees to bring their pets when they evacuate, but some people at the Pentagon and other federal offices are stonewalling them.
Please copy this letter I wrote and send it to your congressional representatives. Thank you!
Dear ____:
As the US Embassy in Cairo works tirelessly to evacuate its employees, one demographic is being pushed to the sidelines and abandoned; the pets of these dedicated people. Many military members and State Department employees brought their pets with them to Cairo when they were ordered to move there months or years ago, with no indication that they would later be forced to abandon their animals in the wake of political turmoil.
The Joint Federal Travel Regulations authorize federal employees an evacuation allowance for their pets during an ordered evacuation.
Unfortunately, the men and women on the ground in Cairo who are working to get our citizens and their pets evacuated are being stonewalled by members of the federal government in the Office of the Undersecretary for Defense and the Pentagon who claim that pets cannot travel on military flights. This is simply not true, and if you don’t step in to help, it may cost these pets their lives.
Please do everything you can to honor our military service members and State Department employees by telling the federal government to enforce its own regulations on the evacuation of pets in an emergency.
Thank you.
