More on the story after the flip.
The Oregon Department of Justice has sued the founder of two charities and his organizations for allegedly illegally diverting money raised on behalf of veterans.
Attorney General John Kroger today announced a lawsuit against Gregory Warnock, accused of personally stashing more than $690,000 raised by the Oregon War Veterans Association and the Military Family Support Foundation to help the state's veterans, and of improperly using the charitable donations to make unreported political contributions.
OWVA has in turn filed for a federal investigation against the Oregon DoJ.
Press release from OWVA
February 11, 2011
Salem—Today, the Oregon War Veterans Association (OWVA) filed a request for a Federal investigation of the Oregon Attorney General (AG) and the Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ) on issues relating to their treatment of disabled veterans, and other disabled persons in Oregon.
This organization has been under scrutiny for some time. Google news doesn't have much of their past shenanigans, but I recall last year things were heating up for them around Rose Festival time when they set out a thousand flags as a "Field of Honor" at Waterfront Park.
From last years Rose Festival schedule
Monday, May 31:
Honorable Service Medal Ceremonies in the south end bowl area by the Field of Honor flag display.
They never passed the smell test for me as all they seemed to do is set up these "Fields of Honor" and give out Honorable Service Medals to Oregon vets, making a big deal out of it.
Most "Veterans Charities" are scams IMHO. For information on vet charities check out Veterans Charities Ratings.
