The California Zephyr Route in Nevada
Back here in our little hamster cages, we continue to monitor and touch the site. We haven't gotten to everything, not by a longshot, and today we had a couple of issues with server timeouts that had to be manually reset. (That's the error where you get a javascript message saying "there was an error saving your story" or another unknown server error message.) In general, we try to send out changes up in the evening when we're less likely to bother people.
Here's what went up tonight.
The big one: server timeouts
There's a change up that should prevent most if not all of these in normal circumstances and make all of our lives a little happier.
Little annoying stuff
- Improved poll formatting
- Proper handling of unicode in RSS feeds
- Groups no longer show sidebars that they can't populate (we'll be populating these later)
- Some search tweaks... I think we're down to the Diary search pulldown just having an issue with Rescued (not going back in time) and Recommended not producing results you might expect. If there are any others, let me know.
- More explanation of roles on the group members page.
- Some Other Stuff™, including some improvements that our DK Editors needed for properly previewing the Feature Box.
We'll keep going down our Top Ten Most Annoying.
The server room looks nothing like this
About reporting
We've been getting your bug reports and we read and appreciate them. But, please understand that we aren't able to look at everything on that list every day, nor can we contact everyone on that list in a timely manner. We ask for your email in case we need to be able to contact you for more clarification (and sometimes we do). Often multiple reports from different people have helped us to pinpoint an issue, but it's too time intensive right now to reply to everyone who reports.
Some people have been using the bug form when what they really need is technical support, and have gotten understandably frustrated when no one helped them. We've modified the form to make it more obvious what kinds of issues can go where. If you need help right now, the technical support messages are answered regularly.
