MADISON, Wisconsin — Republican attempts to disband public workers unions in Wisconsin and other key states are part of a broad strategy to undermine US President Barak Obama and his Democrats at the ballot box, analysts said.
Unions have been the biggest sources of financial and grass roots, get-out-the-vote organizational support for Democrats and have long been a target of business-backed Republicans.
We all know this but I find it pleasurable to see it in print from somebody other than me.
Repubs always go for the 2-fer: in this case they get to destroy unions, which means they get to destroy wages and the power of the 'little person' as well as damage democratic fund-raising and GOTV efforts. (Though I would like to believe any success in damaging the power of unions would be answered with a far greater uproar.)
Newly-elected Republican Governor Scott Walker was unbowed by the days of mass protests and insists that the only way to get his state's finances "on track" is to eliminate collective bargaining rights so public workers can't fight pay and benefit cutsIf they succeed in destroying collective bargaining - if all this little taste of protest isn't successful, I would like to imagine massive protests. The People of this country need to cause some upheaval if this shit is going to be stopped.
Fighting unions is "almost an article of faith" for Republicans who see them as "a block in the path of capitalism," said Ken Janda, emeritus professor of political science at Northwestern University.Ya think?
It's the Culture War raging right in front of our eyes, open and out in the streets.
I think more people would be more motivated if they realized just what contempt these forces aligned against them have for their lives. A lot of the openly stated GOP agenda is just not in your or my interest.
The destruction of what we have known - the "American Dream, A Middle Class, whatever you call it - is the focus of thier side of the Culture War.
It's their jihad and people need to understand this.
