I was browsing the internet today and came upon this article: "Rush Limbaugh: Michelle Obama is no Sports Illustrated swimsuit model." In it, there was a quote by Rush saying :
I'm trying to say that our First Lady does not project the image of women that you might see on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue or of a woman Alex Rodriguez might date every six months or what have you."
If this isn't, Pot calling the Kettle black, I don't know what is! The article goes on to say:
Rush, who has battled prescription-drug addiction, weight issues and was hospitalized in 2009 for chest pains, went on the attack after reading the First Lady had dined on braised ancho-chile short rib with hominy wild mushrooms, sautéed kale and a pickled pumpkin salad with arugala on Feb. 19 at a Vail ski resort with her daughters Sasha and Malia.
"She's a hypocrite," says Limbaugh. "Leaders are supposed to be leaders. If we're supposed to eat roots and berries and tree bark, show us how."
Meanwhile, the First Lady has never suggested that people should live off roots and berries, but moreso that they should strive to eat less fat and be active on a daily basis -- common sense advice for all, including non-swimsuit supermodels.
First, let me make a few comments of my own. Michelle Obama has a great figure; she works out religiously and restricts her food choices. She does not, HOWEVER, have the type of body that has become the standard of beauty in most modern Western Cultures. She is toned, but she has what we call in the Black community, a "thick" body. Although, I would say she is on the thinner side of being thick, she just has hips. My username pertains to this phrase we use: 'Thicka Than A Snicka' refers to a woman who is shapely and curvy with thick thighs, shapely booty, and big breasts. Having a little meat on one's bones never hurt anyone! For many years throughout American history, Women of Color as well as other Ethnic groups have been made of mockery of for our voluptuous figures. It harkens back to a time when ,
The portrayal of Black women as lascivious by nature is an enduring stereotype. The descriptive words associated with this stereotype are singular in their focus: seductive, alluring, worldly, beguiling, tempting, and lewd. Historically, White women, as a category, were portrayed as models of self-respect, self-control, and modesty – even sexual purity, but Black women were often portrayed as innately promiscuous, even predatory. This depiction of Black women is signified by the name Jezebel
I feel like the root of Rush Limbaugh's comments ULTIMATELY stems from this negative connotation of a Black full-figured woman that has been perpetuated for centuries on end. Fortunately, being volutuptuous is a PLUS in the black community, especially amongst alot of black men; and I think in communities everywhere, being a size 2 is not the only ideal anymore. Having an ass is NOT a bad thing! Having a smaller body is not a bad thing as well. I celebrate all women's body type! Curves are Beautiful. Hear hear!
