Some of you know about the life-sized David statue (or Dave, as we have fondly come to know him) bequeathed by a neighbor who didn't want to risk a hernia by moving it, that resides in my back yard with Smiley Creek running behind him. Here you see Dave au naturel.
The original 17 foot tall marble David statue was finished by Michaelangelo in 1504.
I was not the first to be compelled to cover David's naughty bits. A plaster cast of the David at the Victoria and Albert Museum was hastily equipped with this detachable plaster fig leaf when Queen Victoria contracted the vapors at this shocking sight of male nudity.
Replicas abound. One 12 foot replica located at Forest Lawn Cemetery was toppled by the 1987 Whittier earthquake. The pieces of fallen David were sent to California State University Fullerton, where local lore has it that rubbing David's upturned buttocks bestows academic prowess before finals. Empirical studies have yet to butt-ress this claim.
Perhaps if the David was sculpted today, the figure of the ideal man might look a bit different.
Dave's moods change with the seasons as he ages and weathers and blends in with the local flora and fauna. Come spring he becomes a bunny-hugger.
Dave and I wish you all a happy and peaceful Year of the Rabbit!
