The people of Eastern Libya have formed an interim government in Benghazi. The former Libyan Justice minister Mustafa Mohamed Abdel Jalil will head the government. The former Libyan Justice minister did an interview that appeared on Al Jazeera in which he announced the formation of the government and their intention to hold elections in three months. This government has been endorsed by the ambassadors to the UN and the US.
As you will hear if you listen to the video, Jalil has announced that the government has the support of many of the tribes in Eastern Libya at least. They support the protestors in Western Libya (especially Tripoli) and want a United Libya. The new government also appreciates international support including from the West. Jalil also said that his government will be designed to bring democracy to the country and freedom for people of ALL religions and ALL sects.
In addition to this, news has come that Misrata and Zawiyah has fallen into opposition hands. Soldiers are giving up and joining the protestors! Gadaffi is clinging to Tripoli!
Obama NEED to recognize the new Libyan government! And provide whatever aid he can to these brave citizens!
I, like everyone else, I think has been fascinated by the Libyan revolution ("Day of Rage"). The protests in North Africa and the Middle East are so impressive not just for their suddeness and power, but also for their peacefulness and dignity.
But I think that the statement of this new democratic government of Libya is so impressive and so joyous to my ears. These people want freedom and a better life. And through heroic sacrifice and truly just means they are overthrowing a dictator that was so safe that he could kill his citizens with impunity for 42 years.
What a world we live in that a fruit vendor can start a revolution that has brought down three governments. I think that some credit needs to go to the brilliant minds that have created and maintained the social networks that have made this revolution possible. And a great deal of good thoughts and pride in our fellow beings goes to those people in North Africa who are doing the impossible.
As the Libyan people begin to get their freedom, let's us remember their example: for we may need our own "Day of Rage" before this year is over.
