Last week was a revealing one for Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and his Republican allies. Between a prank phone call in which he confirmed his extreme anti-union agenda and Wisconsin Assembly Republicans holding a 1am vote to force through his bill, the country witnessed their all-out assault on state unions and the public workers they represent. Hear the senators and leaders speaking in solidarity with Wisconsin workers, watch the late-night vote, and support the Democrat Senators standing in the way of this incredible abuse of power.
The governor got prank called last week by someone pretending to be a billionaire Republican. Walker revealed that Wisconsin "is ground zero" in the fight against "the public-sector unions." He also said, "sooner or later there will be pressure on these [Democratic] senators to come back."
Wisconsin state senators and congressional leaders responded to these attacks on a conference call with Progressive Campaign Change Committee members. Wisconsin Senate Democratic Leader Mark Miller joined thousands of members on the call, vowing that he and other Democratic senators will "never stop fighting."
Leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus -- Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) -- also voiced their support on the call. Rep. Ellison called the senators "heroes." And Rep. Grijalva declared, "If we win this battle for middle-class workers in Wisconsin, we will win everywhere else." A young progressive Wisconsin senator named Chris Larson responded to their support, "We're standing firm."
After Gov. Walker’s cover of just “balancing the budget” was blown, Wisconsin Republicans decided to completely reject bipartisanship and ram through the radical bill by holding a vote at 1am Friday morning for literally a few seconds.
Now, the only thing keeping this radical bill from becoming law are the state Senate Democrats -- who boldly left the state and are blocking the Senate from voting. Already thousands of supporters have donated over $100,000 in support of these 14 Senators.
If this week turns out like last week, Gov. Walker and Wisconsin Republicans will no longer be able to buy their way back into power. Americans have seen their desperate actions and are taking a stand for the rights of workers in Wisconsin and across the country.
