Last year on September 14th the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph published an article which alleged that the government of Iran had given $25,000,000 to the AK Party, which is currently in power in Turkey.
The AK Party strongly denied the allegations and demanded a retraction and apology from the newspaper.
The allegations got quite a lot of coverage around the world during the anti-Turkish wave which occurred after the Turkish government condemned the Israeli government for its attack on and seizure of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla last year on May 31st, during which nine people (eight Turkish citizens and one U.S. citizen) were killed on the Mavi Marmara by IDF commandos.
Yesterday The Daily Telegraph announced that the allegations were not true and apologized to Turkish PM Erdogan.
Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey
In our online article “Iran donates $25 million to Turkey’s ruling party” (Sept 14) we wrongly stated that Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey had “improperly negotiated and accepted a donation in the sum of $25 million to his AK Parti from Iran to further the party’s campaign in a forthcoming general election”. We now accept that we were misinformed and the allegation was untrue. Neither Prime Minister Erdogan nor his party has negotiated any such deal or accepted any donation of any kind from Iran. We apologise to Prime Minister Erdogan.
