Because Mike Huckabee says so. And that it colored his view of the British among other things.

The potential 2012 presidential contender is continued his current promotional tour for his new book A Simple Government on "The Steve Malzberg Show" last Monday night. And while he didn't agree with radio-host Malzberg saying Obama spent ""millions of dollars in courts all over this country to defend against having to present a birth certificate," Huckabee added his own twist on questioning the President's past.
"One thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example, very different than the average American," said the Fox host. "If you think about it, his perspective as growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution in Kenya is very different than ours because he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather."
I expect to see some "No I'm not a birther" backtracking from Mike Huckabee appearing pretty soon. Like the rest of the "respectable" GOP, he wants it both ways - pandering to the lunatics while not actually coming out and saying he's a birther.
Further, this demonstrates a rather appalling lack of knowledge of the President's life - such as spending time in Indonesia as a child. Which, contrary to the Palin World Atlas, is not close to Kenya.
This may help Huckabee if he decides to run for President with the Tea Brained Republicans, but I expect that unless retracted as dicussed above it will cost him in the general.Updated by blue aardvark at Tue Mar 1, 2011, 05:16:03 PM
Retraction issued: Per spox, "Just a misstatement".
CNN
And of course CNN calls it an "Oops". I think it's worth pointing out that Mike Huckabee thinks he knows something about Obama's personality based on this "oops". And that the British never ruled Indonesia (Dutch, IIRC) and therefore the statement only makes sense if Huckabee meant to say "Kenya".
Today's spell checker FTW: "Huckabee" suggestions include { Huckster, Huckleberry, Packable, Uncheckable }
