The Strengthen Social Security campaign released a series of press releases that highlighted the effects the the budget proposed by House Republicans would have on the states:
The report shows how reduced funding for the Social Security Administration (SSA) for the seven months remaining in this fiscal year will result in furloughs of up to 20 working days and result in closed offices, unanswered phone calls, and significant delays in processing new claims.
...
“Great harm will result from the House Republicans’ recently passed budget that could temporarily close Social Security offices nationwide,” said Nancy Altman, Co-Chair of the Strengthen Social Security Campaign. “Social Security works; we need to keep the program working and the office doors open.”
This will have a particular impact on Florida:
-256,542 people would go to the Social Security office for help and find the lights off and the doors locked;
-169,408 people would call the Social Security office and get no answer;
-39,874 applications for Social Security benefits (retirement, disability, and survivor) could not be processed; and
-168 jobs would be lost and the local economy would lose $8.7 million
Florida's economy and jobs market are in bad enough shape that we certainly don't need any further complications like these. The budget already passed the House, so the top priority would be to contact Sen. Bill Nelson and tell him to vote against this assault on his constituents. Chances are, the budget will have to be adjusted and have to go through the House again, contacting your House members could help as well, as they may be able to get the votes to strip the Social Security attack from the proposal.
Protests are being held at Social Security offices around the country tomorrow, but none were planned for Florida.
