Here are some photography sites that I like. They are web sites that show the work, thoughts and opinions about photographers. They are not resources in the free editing software, online storage, photographer's tools sense of the word. I may write that post at a later time.
Crossposted on my blog Minimalist Photography 101
This is by no means a definitive list, it is not intended to be a 'best of' but rather just sites that I like and use. Some are big multi person projects spanning decades and others are personal blogs written by those who I think have a good eye and a healthy sense of curiosity.
If you are read this and are getting irritated at the omissions great - put a note and a link in the comments. Same thing if you have your own photography based web site. This could actually become a useful resource.
Image Magazine Online
This is an amazing resource. 47 years of magazines in pdf format and an excellent overall search engine. The infrastructure is academic and the articles are substantial. There is certainly opinion in the writing but it is opinion based on education and research not opinion based on 'It sounded good in my head' or 'This advances my agenda'.
American Suburb X
Covers just about everything. Has a very contemporary feel but also provides some of the best coverage anywhere of the historical figures. It is too big to describe and is normally my first or second stop if I am researching something or someone related to photography.
Lenscratch
In the words of Arline Smithson the site owner:
'Lenscratch is a blogzine that explores contemporary photography and offers opportunities for exposure and community.'
Some of the more unusual and interesting things happening in photography can be found here. Just go back through the archives with an open mind and you will be rewarded.
Visura Magazine
this one is contemporary and I do not like the design. It is also designed for 1440px screen resolution which is just plain bizarre. Get past all that though and the contents are worth a look.
BBC News in Pictures
The First of a couple of UK photojournalism slash general photography resources. Not much that I can say about the BBC that hasn't already been said. Some may do better on certain specifics or depth in certain areas but for sheer breadth of content there is no beating them
In Pictures UK Guardian
While we are looking at UK news organizations the Guardian site is an absolute must.
The Big Picture
This is pure raw photojournalism at its best. The images are big enough on the page so you get the impact as soon as soon as the site opens. The problem with most web site formats is that around 400 -600 pixels is the image width so much of the impact is lost.
Lens Culture
Definitely back to the art side of photography with this one. It has Lots of substance and seems to avoid the genuinely controversial. I also quite like the retro orange on black design thing that they've got going on.
Shutter Sisters
I like this one a lot. It is a collaborative blog featuring half a dozen or so women photographers. It is one of the most unpretentious photography web sites there is.
Feel free to add to this list but ideally I think that it should be kept to photographs and photographers. This would leave open the possibility of setting up separate lists for say, free editing software, tutorials and teaching and equipment reviews.
