There it was in neat little 1 inch high block letters written in the corner of the wallpaper of my condo’s elevator. It was scratched a little as if someone tried to blot it out and caused more damage to the wallpaper.
I live in an overwhelmingly republican suburb of Chicago so it came as quite a surprise that this was written were it was. I don’t know when it was inscribed but I noticed it on the day the republicans in Wisconsin pushed through the union gutting bill.
And I thought to myself wow it is really bad out there. I know my own life is spiraling down the celestial toilet but I thought I was the only one troubled enough to think this, let alone vandalize what is really partly my own property. I am 45 obese diabetic and have been unemployed/underemployed for more that 5 years. Fortunately in some ways I have no wife or kids. I had almost 450K in my various retirement funds and was well on the way to a comfortable retirement. Now I have less than 30K left. I have been paying 10% penalty taxes to keep from defaulting on my home loans. What good is retirement if I live under an underpass? Way things are going I won’t live to retirement age anyway. Whatever age that will be when the bastards in Washington decide they need the Social Security trust fund to pay for whatever new war or bailout for the rich.
I guess I should have known it was this bad. The eviction notice on the neighbor across the hall or the association leasing out several unsold and abandoned or bank owned units to make up some delinquent fees. But in white bread republican America they usually blame the democrats, or now the scary brown man in the WHITEhouse. I’m one of the few democrats in my building and a former precinct committeeman; I gave it up in disgust with local and national democrats.
Still I don’t know if the powers that be realize the pain, frustration and rage that is building in the US. God knows the people in the bubble of Washington don’t have a clue. The tea party I think is just a tip of that rage, but that tip is largely made up of duped people who think government is bad and that corporate rule would be better. These fools bitch about how bad they are treated at work while at the same time saying unions are evil. These are the same people that are jealous of the pay of unionized public employees yet buy into the BS that if you only work hard enough you too can be rich. Sort of like the tent revival huckster that says if only you had enough faith when his ‘healing’ does not work. This dream or myth of America as the land of opportunity has been sold to us for so long it is assumed to be as true as the US is the best country in the world because God says so. Yet this dream has faded. How many now can say their kids will be better off than they were? If I could I would give New Zealand or Australia a try. But I doubt they would want me anymore than the US does.
The flip side also surprises me. I have a cousin very active in the Democratic party out west. I still don’t know why she does it. I have lost hope in the politicians. They don’t give a rats ass about us. They tells us what they think we want to hear to get elected then give us excuses when they don’t even give us good lip service. Add to that they are clueless. These paragons of all things governance don’t even know about issues the average blogger knows about. If you ever get a chance ask your local congress critter what the median income in the US for a family of 4 is and see how clueless they are. Or ask them how many carrier battle groups the navy has. Or how much per day the US spends on newer and better ways to kill and make the world safe for what used to be US business. The same businesses that owe no loyalty to the US anymore.
But if the issue of who gives them the most money comes up that they will know.
The real thing that surprised me about all this is. I did not write the words. I would have written
Eat the rich.
