I'm a very strong supporter of a woman's right to choose abortion. If it's not my belly, it's not my business. Period. If it was my wife (exceedingly unlikely, as I am azospermatic), then I would certainly HOPE that we would discuss it. If it was my daughter (even MORE unlikely, as I have two sons) I would hope we would discuss it. But it's the woman's choice.
People who are opposed to this choice call themselves "pro-life". This is offensive. We're all pro-life. They are for forced birth. Because, at the opposite pole from their refusal to allow women to choose abortion is a refusal to allow them to give birth - that is, mandatory abortion. Pro-choice is the moderate position.
So, what is the real pro-life?
People who give blood and donate organs.
I do both.
If you can, you should too.
I'm going to give blood again later today. Yeah, it doesn't fit my schedule that well, but I'll make time. And, while it doesn't hurt much, no one can pretend it feels good to have a needle in you. I'll get over it. My blood could save a life. Or even more than one. So, I have a little discomfort and I have a little inconvenience. And someone else lives.
DEAL!
And I've signed up to donate my organs when I die.
I sure won't be using them!
And, if you read the book Stiff: The curious lives of human cadavers by Mary Roach, you'll realize that nothing very nice happens to your body after you die, whatever you choose to do.
So, I'll let someone else have my organs.
THAT, my friends, is pro-life.
