"Green's Engage," an Israeli Green blog, has this to say:
Palestinians can seek a unity along nationalist lines, with hatred of Israel as the glue. Alternatively, Palestinians can pursue a positive agenda of strong democratic civil society against the occupation, and claim the support of the Israeli people.

What people have to understand is that independence movements, like the Palestinian struggle, don't die out. Let's use our own American Revolutionary War as an example -- if George Washington had surrendered to the British instead of making his daring raid on Trenton in 1776, that would not have been the end of the struggle. The list of injuries and usurpations by the British were far too long. We would have continued to fight for as long as it took even if our efforts had been set back by a few decades. The ANC spent decades struggling against the South African Apartheid regime before that system was finally ended.
The present Israeli government is blind to their own history. The Zionist movement struggled for 150+ years for a state for the Jewish people and finally got their wish in 1948. So to deny their own history and deny basic human rights and dignty to the Palestinian people is just ludicrous.
I would hope that we all condemn the recent violent attack on the settler family that left children dead. That is the whole point. Yet how many times have attacks on children by the Israeli army and police that have left people dead gone unreported? It's just like referees in sport -- if the media wants to do an accurate job of reporting the I/P conflict, they have to call it both ways. That means they have to report it when that happens as well. The Guardian, normally a paper with a pro-Palestinian slant, said that the region had been calm in the past few weeks before these attacks. But that is not accurate -- I read reports of violence by the Israeli army and police on children and civilians on a daily basis, sometimes several times in a day. In addition, there are many other gross violations of human dignity such as the recent kidnapping of a Palestinian in Ukraine by Israeli agents as well as the recent court ruling forcing a Palestinian family to share their home with some right-wing settlers -- good luck with that.
All people have to do to understand what motivates the Palestinian people is to read the pronouncements of the Israeli government regarding peace and compare it to what they actually do. People don't like being lied to -- that's a basic fact of life. All the lies of the Israeli government serve to do is to encourage more violence. That makes the purveyors of the US military industrial complex and the far-right religious extremists happy. For the former, it means more dollars from weapons sales and a big fat bottom line as well as huge corporate bonuses. For the latter, it "proves" their worldview that the Palestinians are somehow less than human.
