Granny Diaries / Number 2 in the Series
Can't kill Liberty, cause it be Spirit, beyond the hate of men. Hope has a hole in it when Republicans come, bring'n shackles and sorrow; branding their greed on the backs of the poor.
Denim. Maggie needed denim. Patches for the knees of Sam's jeans. I told her to smear the patches with milk before sewing so they don't fray. We drank some tea and sucked on lemons from the tree on the porch. Bothers my teeth, but gives a real good pucker.
Kids with old boxes rambled around the yard with imaginations flying. Tea was weak, but have to be careful now, gotta scrimp and make it do.
Clara came asking for my special bowl cause the grandson needed a trim. Bowl fits just right on the head to snip around. Told her to keep the hair for the birds to use in their nests.
She left me two smokes and a popscicle. She's a sweetie, that girl.
Shooed Kiva off the rocking chair. Sat in a cloud of smoke, listening to the kids do what kids do. Beautiful morning and cloudless.
Cars passing kicking up dust with their worn treads and squeaky bolts. Ain't it awful? Bus ain't any better. Full of good folk going to grub for crumbs if it be their lucky day to get picked for work. I don't go. I'm on the social security.
Month eating macaroni with the powdered cheese, but saved enough. Cassie coming with the thin mint cookies. Couldn't disappoint her. Ordered three boxes. Price is high, but it ain't Cassie's fault. Cookie company wants its big profit, even in heart break times.
Yep. Two boxes to share and one from Santa to wrap for under the tree come Christmas. Gotta knit Kiva a gift for under the branches too. Don't forget.
Planes passing over, leaving their trails. I imagine playing checkers on the squares as they criss-cross above. Saved the second smoke for after dinner.
Last can of dog food to slice and fry for sandwiches, but tomorrow is the deposit day. Buy a cube steak and big tater for dinner to celebrate. Tuna for Kiva. She'll roll her eyes and grin like she always do.
Kathy stopped and swept the sidewalk. Asked me if I needed help to cut the pills in half, but they is all gone. She skipped off to see that boy with the cheap tattoos. I worry about her. Her mom drinks the Blue Nun.
Picked basil to sprinkle on the fried sandwiches for dinner. Gus will come a hungry as usual. I will make a couple for him and wrap them in the wax paper. He has a crooked back. Wears a broken brace on his leg, mended with the sticky tape. He'll give me the hug and amble down the road til his tummy growls again.
Come, Kiva girl, lets make the sandwiches. Old radio shows start in a little while and we'll listen to the Lux Theater as the moon comes up. Kiva and I will share the popscicle.
Tomorrow be tuna day! Go wash your paws good, Kiva. It's supper time.
