$1.5 million a piece. That is the cost of every single Tomahawk missile thrown on Libya. So far, the coalition has fired at least 162 sea-launched missiles in a war with no defined purpose, no long-term plan and no logic.
We are interfering in a classic civil war, despite the attempts to label this war as "humanitarian". An article in BBC News today points to the obvious. That the country there is split among tribal lines with Gaddafi having widespread support in the capital Tripoli. We may not like Gaddafi, but we have to face reality as it is. He has significant support in Tripoli and the west part of that country. Otherwise, his regime would have already collapsed. The gamble of the attack against him seems to be that his generals and/or his supporters will abandon him. Well, it is hard to believe that things will work that way and it certainly does not seem to be going that way so far.
$1.5 million a piece just for the missiles. Not to mention the cost of B-2 stealth bombers -- round-trip from Missouri -- to drop 2,000-pound bombs on Libyan sites. Total flying time: 25 hours. Operating cost for one hour: at least $10,000.
We are spending hundreds of millions every day, to achieve what? Bomb a country that is in a civil war. All that at a time when the republicans are pushing for major cuts that will devastate science, research and education in this country.
Obama has shown complete lack of leadership. Among many reasons, he was elected because he is intelligent and he seemed to have realized in advance how wrong the decision to start the Iraq war was. Unfortunately, he just made an error as big, if not bigger, than the Iraq war. He got the country into a new war in Libya, while we are already in 2 other wars. What makes the involvement in Libya even worse, is that we simply took sides in a civil war in another country.
The congress and liberal/progressives should pressure the Obama administration to stop this illogical war now that it is in the early stages. Before it evolves to another Iraq.
