There's been a lot of delight in Gingrich's blatant 180-degree spin in less than one week. First he endorses a No-Fly Zone by US and allies, then--after Obama establishes a No-Fly Zone with allies--Gingrich condemns the action.
This is classic Gingrich reactionary politics. He was out front cheerleading Bob Dole's alternative to the Clinton health care plan, but when Obama promotes a health care plan virtually identical to Dole's, Newt condemns it as creeping socialism. Remember back when he was Speaker and Clinton made him sit in the back of Air Force One on some trip. Gingrich was so peeved that he shut down the government. I don't think that Clinton was even trying to play him; Newt imploded all on his own.
But where Clinton was his adversary, Obama is his nemesis. Who knows why, maybe it's because he senses that his opportunities are slipping away. But it doesn't really matter why; Newt's kneejerk hatred of anything that Obama supports is his Achilles heel.
I'm thrilled that he's thinking of running for GOP presidential candidacy because it's so easy to goad Newt into self-destruction. Knowing how predictable he is in his opposition to anything that Obama proposes, here's a simple plan to exploit his Obama antagonism obsession. It's so simple, it's elegant:
All Obama has to do is send Newt a "Happy Anniversary" card congratulating him on the happiness that he's found with wife #3.
We could make book on how long it will take Newt to turn Obama's approval of his third marriage into divorce #3. Really, he can't help himself. If Obama approves of Gingrich's marriage, the GOP's "intellectual" standard bearer will have no choice but to repudiate the wife in a fit of patriotic fervor.
If having two divorces makes Gingrich a tough choice for the family values crowd, this will be strike three. That should clear the field for Michelle Bachmann.
