With potential water shortages and with the need to conserve energy whenever possible I am going to reintroduce a suggestion I have made before but with a twist. Rather that trying to get everyone to regularly do Navy style showers which is basically impossible (even for me) what we can do is to teach our children and grandchildren to do them normally and save the hot shower for a special day. The interesting thing is that when I told my friends about it they were dubious about doing it themselves but their grand kids actually loved doing it and were very happy to contribute to conservation. So here is how you do it...
First, you can warm up the shower. Lets hope at least our children and grandchildren will be able to get hot showers when they are older. We probably don't need to teach them to take cold showers yet.
Second, get completely wet.
Third, and this is the part that gets almost every adult I have discussed this with unhappy... Turn off the water.
Fourth, soap up and shampoo.
Fifth, turn the water back on and rinse off.
Many kids are concerned about the future and this gives them something they can do that they can say they are doing to help both with water and energy conservation. See if you can do it yourself, but I found when I moved to a cold climate without a water crisis, the regular hot shower has been much more appealing. I am inspired to keep it short though by my previous experience with real conservation.
Feel free to add conservation suggestions in the thread. While you may want to throw eggs at me for not being able to practice what I preach, you might also consider whether you could do the same. Try it once and see... It is even more challenging if you have to shave your legs, but you can always turn on a dribble to rinse the razor.
