I wish I had the articulation to put how disgusting this is into words, but I'll do my best.
From a meeting at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, a new tactic of the Religious Right's Pro-homophobia fight is emerging: Remove the word "Gay" from the picture.
The article by Margaret Hartmann, which also includes the following Youtube Clip, describes the new tactic of renaming the argument.
Ryan Sorba, chairman of the Young Conservatives of California, argued: "‘Gay' is a left-wing socio-political construct designed to create grounds for fundamental rights [based on] whimsical capricious desires ... Gay identity does not exist."
Instead of calling it gay, call it something else, like Sodomy, or Same-Sex Attraction. Anything it seems to keep people from associating to a person and instead try to rebrand it as a fetish to try and say gay people do not actually exist. They believe that by controlling the name, they can control the fight.
And as the writer goes on, it appears to already be in practice:
A lawmaker in Tennessee is working to make sure kids don't pick up the idea that gay people exist. Tomorrow State Senator Stacey Campfield will introduce legislation, known as the "Don't Say Gay Bill," that reads, "... no public elementary or middle school shall provide any instruction or material that discusses sexual orientation other than heterosexuality." Surprisingly, no school in the state is showing fourth graders gay porn or discussing homosexuality at all, but apparently Campfield wants to be prepared.
The article was published just last night, so I'm unsure if the bill has already been introduced or will be introduced some later time today.
I doubt the success of a tactic that tries to erase the existence of millions of people around the globe, but the right has proven disturbingly adept at changing the argument in politics before, so this cannot be allowed to progress any further.
