From the state where the AG says giving payments to non-profits is “unconstitutional” comes this little gem of a school lesson…
Seems a 4th grade teacher is in a bit of hot water for holding a “mock” slave auction in her classroom. You know, that normal lesson plan stuff where you separate 9 year olds by race and put them up for sale to the white children of the class? You know, right?
Oh…you didn’t have that lesson? Come to think of it, neither did I…
Seems a one Ms. Jessica Boyle who teaches at Sewells Point Elementary School thought it would be a dandy idea to teach her class about slavery by humiliating the African American students in her class (40% of the class by the way) by auctioning them off to show the kids just how it worked. But why stop at African Americans? She agreed and also separated out what she felt were mixed race kids too. She’s fair like that.
Well, of course the children’s parents spoke up and the principal of the school, Mary Wrushen, looked into the matter and responded with a letter stating that even though she deviated from the lesson plan, she didn’t mean any harm. See??
"Although her actions were well intended to meet the instructional objectives, the activity presented was inappropriate for the students," Wrushen wrote in a letter to parents.
She meant well! For Lord sakes people, it was just a slave auction already!!! Nothing to see here!
Thankfully, according to ABC news:
Jessica Boyle has been with the Norfolk Public Schools for six years, but this was her first mock slave auction.
Phew! It’s just her first one so I feel better now.
Way to go Virginia!!
