What Are You Working On is a community diary series for all things crafty, in a variety of mediums and techniques.
You may volunteer to guest host by signing up at this yahoo group, which I check from time to time. Also by joining this group, you will receive one email a week when the diary is posted. You may also volunteer to host by posting a comment in this diary.
If you click on the WAYWO group, there is a box for the group about 4 boxes down on the right hand side. If you click on the heart in this box, you will "follow" this group and the diary will appear in your "stream."
Daughter strayed from her typical princess-cake request and said "make it look like this LOLcat!"
So I baked some cakes and made some frosting (new recipe) and came up with this:
I first divided the cake in half, and put the first layer of frosting with orange on one half and white on the other. Then I used a circle cookie cutter that was smaller than 1/3 of the diameter, and made a half-circle outline for each cat head. I filled in a pile of frosting, and kind of patted it into a cat-head-shape.
Adding the details with the darker frosting really made all the difference - the eyes and whiskers suggest a real cat, and improve the look from weird piles of frosting. The pointy ears also helped a lot.
The lesson for me was that I did not have to duplicate a photo, but I could capture a couple elements and get the look of the design.
The big cake was for daughter's party yesterday at the University's bowling alley with all of her classmates invited. It was kind of chaotic.
The second, smaller cake was for dinner with her godparents and their families. It went together quickly.
Now I need to consider the new ballet skirt for the recital tomorrow.
