Anybody who supported McCain-Palin, was in favor of Osama bin Laden being alive today, tomorrow and the year after that. That should be the message we use against our republican/libertarian/independent "friends."
I don't think I need to regurgitate the lengthy media clips/links/etc that are out there with McCain saying he wouldn't have gone into hypothetical country "Pakistan" to take out hypothetical terrorist "Osama bin Laden."
It is clear, it is definite. It is easily understandable. It is an in-your-face simple message with all of the resolution of a single middle finger extending from an extended fist. The republicans were wimps, the Democrats were strong.
And going forward on that front... regarding how Democrats are considered the weaker party when it comes to military affairs... ask those politically differing "friends" what the biggest wars were of the past century?
A) WWI -- Woodrow Wilson, a Democratic President (and the namesake of Woodie Guthrie), took us into the war.
B) WWII -- FDR, a curse-word for some gopers, led the "Greatest Generation" toward defeat of the German crap machine. The "weak" crippled Democrat died in office, so the "weak" Democrat Harry Truman dropped the A-Bomb. (weak)
C) Korea- That damned pussy (Truman, Harry "S"), started another stink-riot.
D) VietNam - Jebus. Kennedy and Johnson took us into that. (I'm a veteran from a later time, and I greatly appreciate the service our Nam veterans gave, regular or drafted.) Yes, after way too long, Nixon did get us out of the war.
E) Grenada. Reagan.
F) Gulf War I ... The first Bush (Mr. H.W.), "drew a line in the sand." After more than a decade of close friendship between the Republican administrations of Reagan and Bush Sr, Saddam got uppity. We liked them/him, especially when he was fighting Iran... until it looked bad on us.
We loved their oil, oh yes. And we had good personal relations, including selling arms and weapons and chemicals, and sending little-known people like Richard Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld to shake hands and be buddies.
(The current multiple wars are in this century, so for the sake of brevity, I'm not addressing them.)

So- that is a brief history of the wars of the United States during the 20th Century. (Yes, I missed a lot of CIA coups, plus Central America, South America, some action in China and the way-back Philippine–American War, but I think my point is clear. Remember my point still?
Democrats got us into all of these wars, some of them the "noble" wars, some of them less so. And a few that have damned us. Yet, why the eff does the gop get away with branding the Democrats as the "weak on defense" party. Hell, we've gotten the U.S. into more than they have (shit, that may not be a good tactic to take).
