I am often critical of this President and his administration, most notably on educational policy.
But I also believe in giving credit where it is deserved.
My immediate reaction a week ago is that he and his administration did a remarkable job of keeping the operation against Bin Laden closely held. Here I cannot help but remember someone in the Bush administration who bragged - I think it was to the Wall Street Journal - that they could track Bin Laden by his satellite phone, which of course was then promptly turned off.
Obama knew there were risks, considered them, gave people on his team a chance to express them and thereby improve the overall plan.
When Steve Croft tried to push him in particular directions, he was able to respond in a way that demonstrated considered judgment, a reasonableness of temperament that one would want in a leader making critical decisions. He also did not find it necessary to gloat. He gave credit to others.
In short, he demonstrated judgment, wisdom, courage, insight, and skill - all qualities we should want in our leaders.
I especially liked when he made clear that as much as he worried about making sure the SEALS could get out, he is concerned any time he orders people into potential combat situations, and is quite aware of the costs when he has to write letters (or make phone calls).
There is no false bravado in what i saw on 60 Minutes tonight. There was a mature leader who understands the costs of leadership.
So I am happy to give credit where credit is due.
Well done, Mr. President.
