While this is a small event in the politics of the day and Presbyterians are not a large majority in the Christian community, I do think the historic vote for inclusion that has passed as of yesterday is meaningful. In part this is because the vote was not a top down edict but instead reflected a grass roots democratic process illustrating that the majority of Presbyterian elders and ministers believed gays and lesbians should not be excluded from the ordained ministry. Another reason it is interesting is that in three previous votes, this inclusion was defeated. There has been a sea change within the Presbyterian Church USA over the past decade about this issue. Institutions and people can change.
