I can't say I am very familiar with the artwork of Jeffery Catherine Jones, although I have seen some of her art. But, she passed away the other day, and I think her life and her work deserves some notice. Jones was certainly one of the best of the fantasy artists influenced by Frank Frazetta, and Frazetta himself called Jones "the greatest living painter."
Her work appeared in Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated and several of the Warren magazines of the 1970s as well as the covers of many science fiction and fantasy works of that era.
In 2001, Jones had gender reassignment surgery. During the past several years, she has suffered from numerous health problems. She had returned briefly to the drawing table last month, but this week succumbed to complications from emphysema.
Earlier this year, IDW published an album of Jones' work entitled Jeffery Jones: A Life in Art
A brief rememberence of Jones by a friend and protege, with some examples of her work, can be found here. Another obit can be found at the ComicMix site.
I wish now that I had looked into Jones' artwork earlier. Her illustration and comics work are simply amazing.
