I have noticed in a few very good, recommended diaries very bad titles that make the same mistake. The diary titles have a quote in them that is not actually said by the person attributed in the quote. Let me re-iterate that these diaries are very good, excellent in fact, and I have nothing but praise for the content of the diaries. But it simply is not correct to improperly attribute a quote to someone, even if it is in the "spirit" of what they say. Two particular examples are:
Simply Disgusting GOP Rep: "Women Should Be Prepared for Rape. I mean, I carry a spare tire."
and
Santorum: "McCain Knows Nothing About Torture, Unlike Me"
In both cases, the title clearly attributes a quote to a particular person, but in fact the quote is nowhere in the diary or the provided links. IN fact, the quotes are paraphrases and pieces of quotes.
For example, the first one, what was actually said wass:
"We do need to plan ahead, don't we, in life?...I have a spare tire on my car."
Now the context was indeed in the context of rape and the spirit of the quote in the title isn't wrong, but it isn't a quote, nonetheless. A more appropriate tile would have been "Simply Disgusting GOP Rep: Women Should Be Prepared for Rape. I mean, "I have a spare tire."
It's a small but important and necessary change. It simply makes it accurate, and we should be, if nothing else, accurate.
The second example is more troubling, because there is in fact nothing in the title that can be attributed to an actual quote by Santorum. Again the spirit is correct, but it is simply not a quote from Santorum. And as much as I dislike the mman, I think it adds a level of disgust that is not present in the record. here is the closest I can come to the quote:
"he (McCain) doesn't understand how enhanced interrogation works."
And Santorum then explains how enhanced interrogation works,at least in his world.
I write this not to drag those who wrote those important and useful diaries out, but to call attention to something, that quite frankly bothers me. The GOP gives us plenty of their own quotes to beat them up with without making some up.
