Black GOPers Allen West and Tim Scott Confident and Unwavering on Medicare. Democrats on the U.S. House are quite giddy after an upset win by Democrat Kathy Hocul in Republican upstate New York. Meanwhile, on the other side of the chamber: The two black Republicans in the House had a few things to say as well. They are standing by their positions on Medicare. The two spoke on the issue today during House votes.
Rep. Allen West: “If I lose an election because I’m telling the truth and it’s based on fact the country has a bigger issue than me losing an election. The country has an issue with people not wanting to except what the facts are and truth…. The board of trustees on Medicare says we have 13 years.”
West has recently had a several eventful townhalls in recent weeks. The issue that has been the centerpoint of those events has been Medicare.
When asked what his response would be when Democrats use the same tactics they did to upset Republican Jane Corwin in upstate New York, West was confident.
“I am not Jane Corwin. I’ve been talking about this issues in town hall meetings. When a guy stood up and said ‘take your hands off my Medicare’ I said ‘fine and in 13 years tell me what you want me to do then?’ We’re dealing with something that’s gonna be gone if you don’t do something… You either come up with some type of solution or we watch Medicare be gone in 13 years. And you know what, I kind of want it around because I’ll be 63, and I want to enjoy it.”
Florida is full of seniors and seniors vote. Many are watching Republicans in Florida carefully to see if they budge on Medicare.
The other black Republican in the House, Rep. Tim Scott of South Carolina, said, “I think New York 26 was about personalities and about passion. It was about lots of issues but not about Medicare. The fact of the matter is that anyone that (inaudible) doesn’t understand anything the Republicans have said about Medicare. Put simply: If you’re on it or ten years near it it ain’t gonna effect you.”
Scott is confident the issue won’t flip the House back to Democratic control in the 2012 elections.
“My constituents haven’t had any concerns about it,” Scott added.
